Background of the Study
Government social protection programs are designed to provide safety nets for vulnerable populations, addressing issues such as poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion. In Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, these programs aim to support disadvantaged groups through cash transfers, subsidized services, and livelihood support initiatives (Afolabi, 2023). The objective is to reduce economic disparities and promote social inclusion by ensuring access to basic needs such as healthcare, education, and housing. Over time, various programs have been implemented with varying degrees of success. Recent evaluations suggest that while some initiatives have improved living conditions, challenges remain in terms of coverage, efficiency, and sustainability (Ighodaro, 2024). This study critically examines the effectiveness of government social protection programs in Ikpoba-Okha, analyzing their impact on poverty alleviation and overall social well-being. By employing both quantitative data and qualitative interviews, the research aims to identify key factors that influence program outcomes and to propose recommendations for enhancing program delivery (Olu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in social protection programs in Ikpoba-Okha, many vulnerable groups continue to experience poverty and social exclusion. Challenges such as inefficient program delivery, limited coverage, and bureaucratic delays hinder the intended impact of these initiatives. The gap between policy objectives and on-the-ground outcomes raises concerns about the effectiveness of current social protection measures. This study seeks to identify the factors limiting the success of these programs and to propose strategies for improving their efficiency and impact (Afolabi, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the effectiveness of government social protection programs.
To identify challenges in program delivery and coverage.
To recommend strategies for enhancing social protection outcomes.
Research Questions:
How effective are social protection programs in alleviating poverty in Ikpoba-Okha?
What challenges limit the success of these programs?
What measures can improve program efficiency and impact?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Social protection programs significantly reduce poverty levels.
H₂: Administrative inefficiencies hinder program effectiveness.
H₃: Enhanced program management leads to improved social outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical evaluation of government social protection programs, offering insights to policymakers and stakeholders. The findings aim to enhance the design and implementation of these programs, ultimately improving the welfare of vulnerable populations in Ikpoba-Okha (Ighodaro, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the effectiveness of government social protection programs within Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, focusing on poverty alleviation and program efficiency.
Definitions of Terms:
